Does the technology or company have to originate from a publicly-funded research institution?
No. Effective July 1, 2018 through the enactment of HB 1285, the Institute's scope was broadened to include assistance to any innovation business in Florida. The Institute continues to support the commercialization of products developed through the research and development activities of universities and colleges, research institute, and publicly supported organizations, but now may also support any startup innovation business in Florida.
Do I have to already be a company in order to receive Institute support?
No, the Institute works with companies in formation as directed by the technology transfer offices of the partner institutions. If you are a researcher wondering if your technology has commercial potential, or are wishing to form a company, contact your technology licensing office and they will work with you to determine the best course of action and when to contact the Institute for support.
Does the Institute provide seed funding?
Yes, the Institute provides seed funding to qualified companies through the Florida Technology Seed Capital Fund, and also works with local investors, federal and state funding programs, and others to help find funding for new ventures.
Can I receive Institute support if I am a private company that is partnering with a university-based startup?
Maybe. These opportunities will be reviewed on a case by case basis in consultation with the appropriate licensing office.
Does the Institute help researchers license their technology to existing companies?
No, that is the job of the technology licensing office at your institution.
