Institute Funds St. Petersburg-based Company

Last month the Institute finalized a funding agreement with Spyglass Technologies, Inc., a St. Petersburg-based company that provides water sensors and software for on-site water quality monitoring. Based on technology developed at the University of South Florida and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Spyglass systems have been deployed for monitoring open ocean and coastal environments. Life Science Professionals Gather at BioFlorida's Annual Conference

An enthusiastic crowd gathered in Tampa on September 16-17 for BioFlorida’s 16th annual conference. This year’s meeting brought together professionals from across Florida and beyond to discuss major trends and issues, including topics related to scientific research, product and business development, financing and public policy.

The conference included Biopitch sessions where select entrepreneurs presented their companies to panels of investors and business leaders.  Representative participant companies included eTectInnovatia Medical SystemsConstellation Research/OqulusPandora GenomicsVigilant Biosciences, and XORTX, and each spoke about their novel products and paths towards commercialization before answering panelist and audience questions.  
 
 

                 
 The Institute Welcomes Two New Associates
 
Two professionals joined the Institute team in September: Susan Scully and Dr. Lawrence Tinker.   

Susan Scully is the Program Manager responsible for supporting the Startup Quest program statewide. She is experienced in developing and launching new workforce development initiatives and in her last position at Catholic University in Washington, DC, established strategic alliances that resulted in several millions of dollars in grant funding. She also ran multi-site, multi-state business communications programs for continuing education and has related experience in marketing and business development.  

Dr. Lawrence Tinker is the Entrepreneur in Residence responsible for research partner institutions throughout northwest Florida. He has more than thirty years professional experience in R&D, product development, intellectual property development, licensing, and corporate management. Prior to joining the Institute, Dr. Tinker was President at RBC Technologies, an independent technology development and licensing company, and led successful efforts to develop and license portable energy technologies.

 

 
 
Last month, over 300 people attended the inaugural Sayfie Review Florida Leaders Summit in Orlando. The mission of the Summit was “Engaging Florida’s Leaders, Shaping Florida’s Agenda, Prospering Florida’s Future.” The two-day event drew state legislators, mayors, county commissioners, CEOs, university professors, non-profit leaders, and many others who connected to focus their combined energies on considering the most impactful issues facing the state of Florida today. On the second day of the Summit, attendees discussed and voted on the top Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAG's) for Florida in K-12, higher education, health, transportation, energy, water and tourism.  Sayfie Review readers will have a chance to vote on the top BHAG in each category in the coming weeks.
