SegAna Wins 2019 Space Florida Accelerating Innovation Award
SegAna, a medical device company based in Orlando, was one of four companies selected at the Florida Venture Forum 2019 Early Stage Capital Conference to receive a cash prize for achievements in advancing Florida’s innovation economy. The conference was held in Orlando, where 20 companies from a variety of industry sectors presented before an audience of investors, deal professionals and entrepreneurs.
SegAna, funded by the Florida Institute in 2016, has developed a cloud-based software platform utilizing artificial intelligence and a proprietary algorithm that measures changes in patient-specific tissue elasticity to enhance radiation treatment of cancer. The company’s patent pending state-of-the-art-technology provides Radiation Oncologists with the ability to accurately define tumor margins on the day of treatment and predict an abnormal treatment up to 3 days in the future. Radiation Oncologists can then develop new patient treatment plans to reduce radiation damage to the tissue surrounding the tumor, ultimately improving patient outcomes.
The company also announced recently that it was awarded a $750,000 competitive grant from the National Science Foundation. More information about SegAna and the award may be found here.
Dominion Aesthetic Technologies Announces FDA Clearance of eon™ FR, Non-Contact Body SculptingWinter Park-based Dominion Aesthetic Technologies, Inc. received FDA clearance for its body contouring product, eon™ FR, which is a non-contact medical device that reduces fat. The laser energy is delivered using a patent-pending powered articulated arm. eon FR more comfortably reduces fat over a larger surface area than its competitors, which is highly desired by both physicians and patients. BioFlorida Southeast Chapter Meeting Focuses on Company Funding

BioFlorida held its 3rd Annual South Florida Life Sciences Showcase Funding Florida Life Sciences: Where’s the Money? on June 13th at the Miami International Airport Hotel. The event attracted over 100 attendees who enjoyed an organizational update from Florida Institute Executive Director Jane Teague, as well as presentations by Miami Airport leadership, representatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and four local Life Sciences companies. Teague highlighted the ongoing need for seed funding for Florida innovation startups in order to grow high-wage jobs and attract and retain top talent, and discussed the successful track record of Institute matchmaking and seed funding programs. Samuel J. Reich Joins Florida Institute Leadership Council
The Institute is pleased to announce that serial biotech entrepreneur Samuel J. Reich has joined the Leadership Council in support of the organization’s technology-based economic development mission. Currently Managing Member of the Reich Group, Mr. Reich served as Executive Chairman of Biscayne Neurotherapeutics (formerly Insero Health), a company focused on developing treatments for epilepsy and other neurological disorders. Originally funded by the Florida Institute in 2012, the company was acquired by Supernusin 2018.

The 22nd Annual BioFlorida Conference will take place at the Tampa Marriott Water Street from October 20-22. This year’s conference will feature:
- life sciences executives, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders;
- scientists, researchers, and commercialization professionals from university and research institutions;
- angel investors, venture capitalists, and potential strategic partners;
- technical and business sessions;
- legislators and economic development partners; and
