Core Technology Licensed from the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC)

GAINESVILLE and BOCA RATON, FL.Sept. 10, 2015 -- The Florida Institute for the Commercialization of Public Research (the Institute) announced today that it has finalized a funding agreement with Robotics Unlimited, Inc., a Pensacola-based company that specializes in bringing cutting edge robotics technology to the consumer marketplace. The Institute supports new company creations based on publicly-funded research, and bridges early funding gaps for companies spinning out of Florida-based universities and research institutions.

Today's ground robots are still relying on old technologies such as wheels or tracks to travel. While they offer good performance for specific applications, there is no technology that enables ground robots to move efficiently at high speeds over a large variety of terrains. Robotics Unlimited has developed unique locomotion technology that allows robots to operate at high speeds over smooth and rough terrains while offering superior battery life, and has incorporated the technology into a mobile platform.

"With a fast, agile and all-terrain ground robotic platform, we are overcoming most of the drawbacks of existing locomotion technology," said Sebastian Cotton, PhD, Robotics Unlimited Founder and Chief Executive Officer. "Our product has been engineered with mass production in mind, with a low cost to manufacture coupled with superior performance."

"Robotics Unlimited is reaching major product development and commercialization milestones by partnering with leading toy companies, and is being recognized by industry frontrunners," said Jamie Grooms, Institute Chief Executive Officer. "The Institute is pleased to support another promising company based on technology licensed from IHMC, and we look forward to supporting their continued growth and success."

About the Institute

Formed by the Florida Legislature in 2007, the Florida Institute for the Commercialization of Public Research is a non-profit organization that works collaboratively with the technology licensing and commercialization offices of Florida's state universities and private research institutions to leverage a $2B+ research base and form investable companies that create clean jobs in new industries that are driving the global economy. Over 100 new company projects have been identified across the state, and the Institute deploys company building and funding programs to promising Florida startups. Forty-one companies have been funded since the program's inception.
